Role Summary:

 

A key purpose of the position is to meet the Company's goal of providing timely and accurate reporting to satisfy the increasingly demanding requirements of OSFI, Provincial and other institutional bodies such as foreign jurisdictions, Statistics Canada, CLHIA, external audit and our internal clients. The incumbent is required to have strong accounting knowledge and in-depth knowledge of various regulatory guidelines in order to apply them accurately in reporting, and to give guidance and assistance to staff and business groups, companywide. Solid analytical and problem solving skills will be required to identify solutions to more complex issues. The incumbent is required to build and maintain strong and effective internal and external business relationships through effective verbal and written communication skills.

 

Main Accountabilities:

Prepare various quarterly and annual Life-1 returns for filing with OSFI, Provincial and other Canadian regulatory bodies by the due dates. This will involve requesting and receiving data from territories and reconciling to the General Ledger (G/L) and other sources (e.g Financial Statements, MD&A, etc and analyzing the variances from prior period which includes the development and enhancement of reports for financial analysis and determination and setting up new control checks. In-depth knowledge of the Life-1 guidelines is required, and accurate and timely communication to business partners of the changes in requirements and its implementation. It is imperative that the Company is in compliance with all OSFI and other regulators' requirements

Annually review federal, provincial, foreign and other regulatory and compliance reporting requirements and filing deadlines; liaise with the regulators and internal lawyers as required to confirm requirements and ensure new and recent changes to the requirements are documented and communicated to the appropriate levels/areas on a timely manner.

Maintain control over the numerous quarterly and annual reporting requirements

Ensure accurate and timely filing of the miscellaneous foreign filings, Statistics Canada, CLHIA and other surveys, and keep apprised of the rules and regulations in order to reflect any adjustments to the filings

Participate in preparation, collection, reconciliation and analysis of quarterly and year-end MCCSR data, including the analysis of information received, preparation of the Surplus Appropriation and Employees' Loan schedules for use in Life-1 and MCCSR returns and by other departments. Liaise with other departments globally to ensure accuracy of information, to resolve issues in timely manner, and to provide explanations for the variances

Review and ensure accuracy and timely payment of the Federal and Provincial assessment and the Provincial licensing fees. This includes liaising with various business areas to determine and set up annual assessment accrual limits by line of business, and accurate and timely record keeping. Review and approve monthly account reconciliations in accordance with the Company's standards and guidelines

Assist Director with the supervision of staff, training and cross-training needs

Maintain regulatory reporting hierarchies; and assist with ad hoc requests for information from external and internal clients. Participate in projects as they arise 

Competencies and Skills:

Able to interpret data and transactions in accordance with OSFI and other regulatory requirements

Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage various activities concurrently and meet deadlines

Proficient in Excel, Word and PowerPoint

Working knowledge of Oracle general ledger system and reporting tools

Ability to produce, analyze and explain trends and stats

Ability to identify opportunities for efficiency, and recommend and implement process improvements 

Education and Experience:

Recognized accounting designation (CA, CGA, CMA) or working toward one, with insurance industry experience preferable

Minimum of 5 years work experience in finance, accounting and related areas

Minimum of 5 years leadership skills
